A Kind of Substitute 304L Dual Phase Steel UR2202
In many applications, it is recommended to replace austenitic materials with cost-effective dual-phase steels, which have at least comparable corrosion resistance and better mechanical properties. For example, UNSS32304(EN 1.4362) may be used to replace 316L(EN 1.4404) in a steamer for a seawater desalination plant; UNSS32305(EN 1.4462) may be used to replace 317LMN(EN 1.4439) in an absorber for a flue gas desulfurization plant. J.Peultier et al. have developed a new cost-effective Mo-free duplex stainless steel UR2202(EN1.4062-X2CrNiN22-2,UNSS32202), which can replace 304L(EN1.4307), cement, organic materials or galvanized carbon steel used in domestic water installations, pipeline industry & paper industry and construction applications. In order to obtain a microstructure with about 50% ferrite and 50% austenite, the reduced Ni is balanced by the addition of N. After preliminary studies on a laboratory scale, mass production was carried out with 22Cr%, 2Ni% and 0.2N% as standard components. This low-Ni, Mo-free steel is less affected by fluctuations in raw material prices than standard austenitic steels. A Cr content of 21.5 or more can make it have better pitting corrosion resistance and uniform corrosion resistance than 304 or 304L, and sometimes can be equivalent to 316 or 316L. Because of the dual phase microstructure and the addition of 0.2% nitrogen, the tensile properties of the steel can be improved to about 2 times that of standard austenitic steel.
